After bankruptcy credit repair is easier than you think! Let’s look at the process of reestablishing your credit.
Get a copy of your credit report from each of the three credit bureaus. You need to make sure that your report is accurate, so review it carefully. Chances are you will find more than one account that was included in your bankruptcy that is reported as being open and currently delinquent. You will want to dispute these accounts with the credit bureaus. Write a letter to each of them and send it via certified mail. Make sure you include a copy of your bankruptcy paperwork so that your report can be accurately updated.
Once your credit report is cleaned up, you will need to begin reestablishing your credit history. The key is to show a history of paying on time without actually taking on a lot of debt. It is a good idea to pay for normal expenses, like gas, with a credit card and then pay this off each month. That way you are using the card, but not buying things that you cannot afford to pay cash for. The best place to start is to get after bankruptcy credit cards, i.e. secured credit cards.
Secured cards are great for your situation, because approval is guaranteed. You simply make a deposit with the creditor and they give you a credit card with a limit equal to your deposit. Just make sure when you look for a card that you make sure that the company reports to all three credit bureaus. You will also want to make sure that the company does not charge fees that are out of line.
Once you have established a payment history with a secured card, you can move on to other types of credit, like unsecured cards for people with bad credit. Your credit will be back on track before you know it!
